In India, women have the legal right to inherit property from their parents, husbands, and other relatives. The legal framework for women's property rights in India has undergone significant changes over the years, with several legislative and policy initiatives aimed at addressing gender inequality.

The Hindu Succession Act of 1956 was a significant step towards women's property rights in India. It abolished the discriminatory practices that had previously denied women the right to inherit property, regardless of whether they were married or unmarried. The act also recognized daughters as legal heirs, giving them equal rights to inherit property.
In 2005, the Hindu Succession Act was amended to further strengthen women's property rights in India. The amendment gave daughters the same rights as sons to inherit ancestral property, even if the property had been acquired before the amendment came into effect.
Apart from the Hindu Succession Act, other laws, such as the Indian Succession Act, the Muslim Personal Law, and the Special Marriage Act, also provide for women's property rights in India. However, despite these legal provisions, women still face several challenges in exercising their property rights. In many cases, women are not aware of their legal rights or are discouraged from claiming them due to social and cultural norms that prioritize male inheritance.
To address these challenges, the government of India has taken several initiatives to promote women's property rights. These include awareness-raising campaigns, legal aid clinics, and special schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana, which provides financial assistance to women for building and buying houses. Despite these efforts, much more needs to be done to ensure that women in India can exercise their property rights without fear or discrimination.
